BAYLOR COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

Premedical Honors College

Major Program Benefits

Acceptance to the Premedical Honors College (PHC) provides conditional admission to Baylor College of Medicine upon completion of undergraduate requirements at UT-PA. The conditional acceptance requires students to maintain a 3.4 minimum GPA (on a 4.0 scale), and a 3.1 science GPA, and to score a minimum of 27 on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) with no section less than 7. The PHC provides rigorous academic preparation for medical school, and provides students with summer clinical, enrichment, and research programs and experiences to improve preparation for medical school.

Application and Selection Procedures

Applications for the Premedical Honors College are due by February 1, 2008. The complete application includes: (1) an application to University of Texas - Pan American (UT-PA), (2) a separate pre-med application involving four essay questions and information concerning high school honors, awards and extra-curricular activities, (3) complete high school transcripts including SAT scores (ACT scores will not be accepted as a substitute), (4) application to the UTPA Excellence Scholarships, (5) information regarding coursework completed and in progress during your senior year, (6) completion of demographic information sheet which will be separated from your application when it is received, and (7) three letters of recommendation.

UT-PA Application

Self-explanatory. If you have previously submitted a UT-PA application, it is not necessary to submit an additional application for this program. The general UT System application accepted by University of Texas four year colleges, can be used in place of the UT-PA application.

Pre-med Application

This is specific to the UT-PA/Baylor Premed program. Your application will be evaluated in terms of depth of your personal statements. Please use the sheets and format provided in the application. You may include a resume for your extracurricular activities, but please include the form with your signature. In the blanks, indicate that additional sheets are attached.

Transcripts

Your registrar's office will forward transcripts. This usually involves coursework that has already been completed. For evaluation of your application we need (1) your transcript, (2) fall semester grades, (3) courses in which you are enrolled Spring semester. A transcript from your registrar's office often does not include fall semester grades or spring semester schedules. Please work with your high school counselor to get the enclosed Course Enrollment/Grades form completed and verified. Your SAT scores, high school grades, class rank, and number of courses of math and science taken in high school are data used to evaluate your application.

References

There are forms in your application packet for the letters of recommendation. Please fill in your name, social security number and high school in the respective blanks on the recommendation form prior to giving it to your references. One reference letter should be from your high school counselor, one from a math or science teacher, and the third from anyone in the educational field who is familiar with your academic performance and capabilities.

Deadlines and General Information

In order to be considered, the application must be completed and postmarked by February 1, 2008. After students have been admitted to UT-PA, the Admissions Committee at Baylor will review program applications. Student finalists will be invited to Houston for interviews with representatives of the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) Admissions Committee, including physicians, instructors, and medical students. Interviews will be held on March 7, 2008. Notification of acceptance to the program will be made in late March. Students selected for the program must attend an orientation session at UT-PA if they have not attended a previous orientation. Those applicants not admitted to the program will be counseled regarding the wide variety of health career options, including medicine, and will be encouraged to apply to BCM at a later date. All students are encouraged to apply for financial aid (deadline: April 15, 2008) and UT-PA scholarships (Deadline: December 1, 2007). Application forms for UT-PA scholarships and financial aid should be available from your high school counselor’s office. If you need additional information or have questions, please contact Dr. Cindy Martinez Wedig, Program Coordinator, at (956) 316-7025 (e-mail: cindy@utpa.edu), or a program staff person (Barbara Robles) at (956) 381-2847.

The entering class of 2008 represents the 15th group of students accepted into the premedical honors college. There are students, residents, and fellows in the pipeline, and practicing physicians who have all achieved success through the PHC.
