During
the fall semester, recruitment materials are produced and distributed
by Lisa and PHC student staff hired to work in the office as well.
Nearly two thousand applications are produced, compiled and distributed
to high school counselors, principals, and interested students in
South Texas every year. Recruitment presentations are conducted
at high schools where interest is demonstrated.
In the spring, applications from interested students pour into the
office. On average, the program receives 150 to 200 applicants per
year. The PHC office staff is responsible for the compilation and
organization of applicant files, as well as correspondence with
the applicants themselves. Applicants are interviewed in March,
and it is the PHC Staff that accompany/chaperone the students to
Houston.
During the summer, the Premedical Honors College offers the Students
Unite in pre-college Essential Survival Skills (SUCCESS) online
summer program. The course is meant to introduce high school students
to concepts in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics; as well as technical
writing skills. The course also serves as a transition from high
school to college for entering freshmen. Dr. Cindy Wedig conducts
the Applied Science component of SUCCESS and Lisa conducts the Writing
in Science and College Survival Skills components; all three of
which are online. Students do, however, meet on campus several times
during the summer for laboratory exercises which compliment their
readings. If anyone is interested in knowing more about this program,
they can contact the PHC office.
Every month, the program produces a newsletter, Liderazgo, which
is distributed to PHC students, alumni, preceptors, and high schools
in south Texas. Liderazgo features PHC highlights, events, student
write-ups, medical student reports, summer research opportunities,
and program applicant and participant statistics. The newsletter
is compiled, edited, reproduced, and distributed every month by
PHC office staff in conjunction with Dr. Wedig. |
