The Master Reading Teacher Certificate (MRT) is designed for pre-K through grade 12 teachers who wish to teach reading and mentor other teachers.  Participants in the program gain a thorough understanding of the reading process, how to work with struggling readers including English Language Learners, and how to provide quality mentoring and professional development.

Teachers become certified as MRTs in one of two ways:

1) A teacher who has a valid Texas teaching certificate and at least three years teaching experience satisfactorily completes the required coursework at UTPA.  Upon completion of the coursework, this person must pass the MRT certification exam.

2) A teacher who completes the Reading Master's degree from UTPA, takes the Reading Specialist TExES exam, and obtains a Reading Specialist certificate automatically qualifies for MRT certification. In this case the person in not required to take the MRT certification exam.
