Students Enjoy Clinic Setting for Skill-Oriented Classes

The Clinic doors are slowly opening, as Clinic Director Dr. Santiago Silva takes on the task for defining the course of the Clinic's services in its 8000-square-foot digs. Meanwhile, some of the Counselor Education faculty, such as Drs. Kranz and Sparrow are using the highly conducive Clinic setting for their smaller, skill-oriented classes, in which students need quiet, confidential settings for practicing their counseling skills. Dr. Sparrow -- who teaches Individual Methods and Techniques as well as Group Methods and Techniques -- says, "The Clinic is a perfect setting for my classes. First we meet in the seminar rooms for our regular class time, and then we break up into smaller groups, or triads for the actual counseling practice. The setting," says Dr. Sparrow, "makes all the difference in the world."

    New Advisement and Enrollment Procedures
Promise Relief

Each semester, students worry that they won't be able to get the classes they need. Until now, that worry has been well justified. But with the introduction of new advisement and enrollmment procedures, the registration "panic" may soon become a thing of the past.
The Counselor Education faculty has worked hard to institute course sequencing over the past two years, resulting in virtually every student having a clear map of how to proceed in their coursework. Meanwhile, enrollment has recently been limited to 50-60 new students during the fall and spring semesters, thus reducing the demand on available courses. Further, we have more faculty members now, so we can expand somewhat our course offerings without overloading each instructor.
Other changes are being considered. For one, we are considering using online and email procedures as a substitute for in-person advising in some cases. Stay tuned for more developments. In the mean time, take several deep breaths and don't panic! We're working hard to eliminate the stress associated with registration.
