Counselor Education Program
Admission Requirements

For...

  • M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling and Counselor Certificate
  • Counselor Certificate Only

LPC Coursework after Master's degree now requires a separate application upon completion of the M.Ed. (See Licensure track.)

1. A student is required to be admitted to graduate study by the University under a probationary or clear status (see Catalog for Admission requirements to the University), at which point the student must submit an application for admission to the Master of Education degree program in Guidance and Counseling.

During the Spring and Fall semesters, approximately sixty applicants are accepted into the Guidance and Counseling Program. If you have applied to the Counseling Program, but have not been accepted, you may take EPSY 6300 and 6370 (or 6350), but may not enroll in core curriculum courses (See Degree Requirements and Degree Programs).

2. A student is admitted into the Counseling Program, and may begin taking core curriculum courses, beginning with 6361 and/or 6362.

3. Students who are denied admission for any reason may appeal to the Counselor Education faculty in the following manner:
    a. File a letter of appeal
    b. Provide an essay that details significant life events, with an emphasis on achievements and responsibilities that would indicate an ability to undertake graduate work with a probability for success in the field of counseling.
    c. Complete an interview by a committee of Counselor Education faculty.
