You
will complete a degree program during your first course in the core
curriculum -- that is, during 6361 (6360 for LPC-track students) or
6362
Option I: M.Ed. in Guidance and
Counseling and School
Counselor Certificate Plan
Students seeking a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling and
School Counselor Certificate are required to take 39 semester hours,
including the courses listed under both Foundations and Core Courses in
Counseling.
Option II:
Counselor Certificate Only
Students with a Master’s Degree and Teacher certificate may enter a
Counselor Certificate-Only program that requires 27-30 semester hours,
primarily in the areas of Foundations and Core Courses.
NOTE: The TExES Examination has a significant number of items in the
areas of Human Growth and Development, and Counseling the Culturally
Diverse.
Students are advised to take EPSY 6390 and a course in the cultural
foundations area, or demonstrate competency in the two areas prior to
taking the TExES examination.
Option V: LPC
Coursework after Master's degree
Students
returning to UTPA seeking licensure after receiving a Master's degree
in counseling must take three additional courses to fulfill the state
requirements. However,
admission into the LPC Licensure track is not guaranteed. Each student
must apply for admission.
