TExES English Language Arts and Reading Tests
(4-8 OR 8-12)

How to prepare for the TExES test

The TExES tests in English, for both middle school and secondary levels, consist of multiple-choice questions; at the secondary level there is also an essay question. Most of the multiple-choice questions will require you to apply your knowledge of language, literature, and pedagogy to specific classroom situations. A few questions will focus on content knowledge. The essay question will ask you to analyze a brief literary passage or passages.

  1. Study the TExES preparation manual and take the practice tests (they can be downloaded at no charge from www.texes.nesinc.com).
  2. Attend the review sessions sponsored by the English Department.
  3. Take the TExES Representative Form, which includes items similar to those that will be on the actual test and an essay on 8-12 exam. You need to have taken or be currently enrolled in English 4318 or English 4325 to take this exam. To register, you need to see Dr. Beatrice Mendez Newman for clearance and for instructions in how to complete the TExES Representative Form registration process. Currently, the test costs $15. If you take this exam, Dr. Newman is authorized to review test items and the essay with you after your test results are available.

TExES Eligibility

  • Undergraduates (pre-degree): You must be in a recognized certification degree program to be eligible to take the TExES. Obtain an official transcript and a copy of your degree plan. Bring these documents by Dr. Beatrice Mendez Newman’s office for evaluation. You are eligible to take the TExES if you have completed all your English and Reading courses and are no more than six hours from completing all the coursework required for your degree. You must also have attended three TExES Review Sessions. You are eligible to take the TExES “early” if you meet the following requirements: a 3.25 GPA in English and Reading courses; a passing score on the TExES Representative Exam; and attendance at three or more review sessions.
  • UNIVERSITY graduates (post-degree): Check with the Office of Student Services in the College of Education (Room 1.302) to determine if you meet all criteria for taking the TExES..
  • Certified Teacher: If you are a certified teacher in Texas and wish to attempt an ELA/Reading TExES, you may register on-line through the State Board for Educator Certification web site (www.sbec.state.tx.us). You do not need to be cleared by the university.
