PROJECT
DESCRIPTION
Borderlands are generally regarded as the edges of a nation, marginal
and peripheral to its cultural life. But a border region, such as the
Lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, with its own sense of identity
and its own idea of cultural centrality can be energetically and dynamically
engaged in setting trends and patterns. History shows all great civilizations
developed at the intersections of cultures, and the Lower Rio Grande Valley
of South Texas is such a unique American community. As we enter the 21st
century, the borderlands bare significant considerations. For centuries
the Lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas has been the "frontier" of
vast migrations of people, of dynamic social, economic, and political
systems, an area of cultural confluence. Because of this unique historical
and cultural evolution, the region is important in responding to social,
political, and economic changes.
The
goal of the Lower Rio Grande Valley Multimedia Archive Project is to provide
information on the people and culture of South Texas-one aspect of America's
rich heritage. The desire is that the project builds intercultural bridges
among all the multiethnic communities. The LRGV Multimedia Archive was
created for academic use and for the public in general who wish to learn
about the history and culture of the region.
