Trayless dining promotes conservation and offers expanded menu options
In an effort to protect the earth’s natural resources and follow the president’s mission to become a greener campus, dining at The University of Texas-Pan American has gone trayless.

U.S. Department of Education awards UTPA a $2.4 million grant
The University of Texas-Pan American was recently awarded a $2.4 million grant over two years by the U.S. Department of Education under the College Cost Reduction Act Program.

UTPA students talk about science with National Science Foundation head
A number of students at The University of Texas-Pan American had the opportunity of a lifetime Sept. 28 when they were able to discuss their interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields and careers with Dr. Arden L. Bement Jr., director of the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Reptiles and Jeff Corwin kick off Distinguished Speakers Series
Jeff Corwin, wildlife conservationist and host of the popular Animal Planet show “The Jeff Corwin Experience” and “Corwin’s Quest,” was the first speaker for The University of Texas-Pan American's annual Distinguished Speakers Series that kicked off Tuesday, Sept. 30 at the Fine Arts Auditorium. Hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and the general public packed the auditorium for an opportunity to hear from Corwin and meet some of his animal co-stars.

UTPA receives a record number of grants for community engagement
The University of Texas-Pan American has recently received eight grants totaling more than $2 million for its work in community engagement. These grant funds will be used during 2009 in three of the University’s community engagement areas, including the areas of business development, community development, and rural development.

Dressed for success and with their résumés in hand, more than 2,000 college students attended The University of Texas-Pan American’s annual Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Career Fair at the University campus.

Along with her appearance as a keynote speaker during HESTEC’s Latinas Day at The University of Texas-Pan American Sept. 24, Magda Yrizarry, vice president of Workplace Culture, Diversity and Compliance in corporate human resources for Verizon, met with several UTPA Verizon scholars and recent Verizon scholar graduates, all business majors.

UTPA gears up for historical presidential election
This year’s presidential election will make history, and The University of Texas-Pan American students, faculty and staff are gearing up to become more civically engaged, by attending the Register to Vote Rally, Oct. 1 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., and Go Vote Rally, Oct. 28 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., both held at the UTPA Chapel Lawn.
