The Club
The Anthropology Club at The University of Texas-Pan
American is an organization made up of students and non-students who share an interest
in anthropology and is closely associated with the Anthropology Department at
the university. Our goal is to promote the study of culture not only on the UTPA campus
but in the Rio Grande Valley as well. To reach our goal, we engage in activities such as
sponsoring top lecturers and organizing field trips to sites of anthropological
significance. We have a four member faculty who are also members of our club. Our two
sponsors are Dr. Shelia
Pozorski and Dr. Tom
Pozorski both interested in the study of Andean archaeology, as well as Dr. Mark Glazer who studies
Mexican-American folklore and Dr.
Stacy Schaefer who studies the Huichol of Mexico.

Past Trips
In May 1998, the club took a trip to Mexico City and Puebla. Members also visited Cacaxtla
and Xalapa. See our photo album.
In Mexico City, we visited the National Anthropology Museum (Museo Nacional De
Antropologia e Historia), Chapultepec Park, Templo Mayor, Museo Casa de Leon Trotsky,
Museo De Frida Kahlo, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and Plaza Garibaldi (Mariachi bands!).
Around Mexico City, the club visited the famous Teotihuacan ruins. We hiked up the massive
Pyramid of the Sun and Moon, stroll around the Avenue of the Dead and explored adjacent
complexes and temples such as the Citadel, Temple of Quetzalcoatl, and Palace of
Quetzalpapalotl.
Outside Mexico City, we Tula (the Toltec capital) in the state of Hidalgo. Tula is known
for the colossal stone atlantean/warrior figures and bas-reliefs of coyotes, felines, and
heart eating eagles.
While relaxing at Xochimilco's canals and floating islands, we enjoyed good food, drinks,
and "floating mariachi bands" on a comfortable boat.
Members also visited the murals in Cacaxtla, the architecture beauty of Puebla, and the
Museum of Anthropology in Xalapa, Veracruz.
All members who went on any past trips are kindly asked to lend the club any pictures they
may have about their adventures so that we may scan them into our web page. To lend some
pictures, please contact Dr.
Mark Glazer or any club officer.
